Public art is everywhere right now.

Murals on silos, buildings, fences, laneways - whole towns being reshaped through colour and creativity. And it’s easy to see why.

Public art makes places feel alive. It tells stories. It gives communities something to point to with pride.

But there’s something we don’t talk about enough.

Who actually gets to make it?

Most of the time, it still works the same way: an artist is brought in, a brief is written, a mural is designed, painted, and then the artist leaves. The community is then told, “this is your story.”

And while the result can be beautiful, the process often misses something important - real involvement.

Because there’s a big difference between being represented in something… and being part of making it.

From consultation to contribution

We think public art works best when people aren’t just consulted, but actually involved.

Not just giving feedback on ideas, but physically helping shape the work itself.

Especially young people. They’re often the ones most connected to their place, but least often given a real role in shaping it.

So we ask a simple question:

What changes when young people aren’t just looking at public art, but helping create it?

From watching to participating

When people are part of making something - not just watching it happen - something shifts.

They care more.

They feel more connected.

They see themselves in the place they live in a different way.

It stops being “just a mural on a wall” and starts becoming something they had a hand in.
