The Romsey StreetLight Program is a place-based youth mental health and community connection initiative delivered in Romsey, Victoria - where young people co-created a large-scale public mural to strengthen belonging, pride, and wellbeing.

"It was so amazing to see our young people light up with their ideas sharing what Romsey as a town means to them. It helped show the whole community our young people in a totally different light..."

Shantelle Grant, Romsey Lancefield Lions Club.

A Partnership for Youth, Place, and Pride

The Romsey & Lancefield Youth Mural Project brought together young people, schools, and community leaders to transform a public space into a powerful visual story of identity, connection, and hope.

Delivered by Creative Sparks Projects, and made possible through the leadership and support of:

  • Romsey & Lancefield Lions Club

  • Romsey Lancefield Community Bank

  • Victorian State Government – Department of Health (Community Wellbeing Funding)

This initiative demonstrates what is possible when local leadership, youth voice, and cross-sector investment come together to create visible, lasting impact.

“Creative Sparks Projects delivered their powerful, StreetLight Program here in Romsey that strongly aligns with our youth priorities. Particularly in strengthening connection and belonging, elevating the youth voice, increasing opportunities for young people to actively participate in their community, and supporting their personal development. The project created meaningful access to creative opportunities for young people in our region. By empowering young people to shape their community, it fostered genuine engagement while delivering a lasting asset the whole community are so proud of. We see clear value in this model and would encourage other councils to explore bringing Creative Sparks Projects to their communities.”

CEO, Macedon Ranges Shire Council

Why this Project matters?

Young people in regional communities are experiencing increasing levels of:

  • Social isolation

  • Mental health challenges

  • Reduced sense of belonging

  • Limited opportunities for creative civic participation

In response, Creative Sparks Projects uses public art as a preventative mental health strategy — not just another pretty picture on the wall.

This is place-based intervention in action:
When young people shape the places they live in, they strengthen their connection to themselves, each other, and their community.
